Seeking Guidance
“Seeking Guidance”, Monotype, relief, collage, and thread on paper, 8” x 10”
Originally created for the "This is Me" Print Exchange organized by Melanie Yazzie, "Seeking Guidance" introduced quilting motifs into my artwork in 2020. The themes of patchwork quilts and their significance deeply resonated with the intentions and concepts of my work. Additionally, this exchange was my first experimentation with mixed media printmaking, which included both monotype and relief. Above, you can see the varied edition of the prints and the exploration into what would be the beginning of my larger body of work.
Artist Statement:
Using quilting as an overarching theme, “Seeking Guidance” reflects my search for a better understanding of myself. With fragmented memories of my upbringing, I feel that as an adult I am patched together, similar to a quilt, created with whatever was available at the time.
The eight-pointed star is a symbol of guidance, its significance in quilting originating from homesteaders traveling West and using the stars for navigation. This star is seen being stitched into my self-portrait, reflecting the guidance I am seeking for a better understanding of not only myself but who I wish to be in the future.
